Beyond Traumatic Brain Injury : Pain and Hope

Love Your Brain This Month! March is Brain Injury Awareness Month. In 2007 I began meeting with a young woman that had survived a Traumatic Brain Injury. We began meeting regularly and building a relationship of trust and blending movements, breathing and re-directing thoughts to focus and steady the mind. As a yoga teacher offering services to this community I have expanded beyond the ordinary yoga class experience into a whole new realm of helping people heal using yoga in everyday life.
In the early days of working together I knew nothing of Brain Injury. After our “In-Home-Personalized-Yoga” sessions I would sit in my car and cry. I experienced only a glimpse into the on-going difficulties inflicted on this family and I felt the pain but was also uplifted by the loving determination. I was inspired to learn about the therapeutics of yoga to be of greater service. After working for hundreds of hours in this specific community it’s easy to see that good support is everything. The life altering knowledge for me personally was, “a person with a brain injury is never the same again.” It is so important for you to know that anyone in an instant can fall victim to Brain Injury and your life will be changed forever.
Poetically I’ve stated, “Yoga does wonders for your mind-body-connection”. However sophisticated technologies are proving this statement to be true. First-time-yoga students report feeling increased mental stability and clarity after a single session.
All March in Honor of Team Anna-Marie (Dawn Greenfield’s first TBI Yoga Student whom she is still teaching “In-Home-Personalized-Yoga”) Yoga Born is collecting donations for the BIAC ( Brain Injury Alliance of CT ) . Dawn stated this week, “I am honored to be apart of Anna-Marie’s Team. She told me today, “I want to walk” and I will help her towards her goal. We visit regularly and I owe so much to her and her family for the opportunity to be of service and grow [personally and professionally]. When brain-storming with my daughter to create the name of her business the heart-felt experiences of TBI where fresh in our thoughts. Veronica said, “Mom, you always say that we’re all born to do yoga, why not Yoga Born?” That was it and we opened Yoga Born Studios in 2011. Our family business is thriving in Town Center Plaza in South Windsor. I invite you to visit during Visitors Day Sat, Mar 16th! It’s always a good-day at Yoga Born.”
