While I was aware of yoga for a long time, it was the effects of time that finally got me to take action. They say getting older is not for sissies and as I have aged I get what they mean. I noticed that I couldn’t turn my head as far when driving because I’m less flexible, going up and down stairs was a little harder, I’m slower in my movements, my balance is not as good, I’ve gained some extra weight, I feel tired, I’ve lost muscle strength and it’s much easier to do something that results in muscle or joint pain. One specific issue is my knee. I had knee surgery a few years ago for a torn meniscus. Since then that knee joint is weaker than the other and it was really starting to bother me, especially climbing stairs.

I knew from what I had heard that yoga helped with all of those issues. Yoga increases flexibility and balance, builds muscle strength, improves breathing and energy, helps maintain a healthy weight and more. My wife, who has Rheumatoid Arthritis, started practicing yoga a year before I did and raved about the positive impact it was having in her life and with her RA. Even knowing all that it was difficult to overcome inertia and get started.

It was pain that finally motivated me. I had pulled some muscles and was a lot of pain in the neck and shoulder area. I hurt all of the time and it was really starting to wear me down. I go to the chiropractor weekly and I knew from experience that over time this would resolve the issue and get everything back in alignment. I was, however, looking for some immediate relief. I visited Cari Mott, a massage therapist who works out of the Yoga Born studio. After my massage Dawn Greenfield, the owner of Yoga Born, started talking to me about yoga. As we spoke I realized that this was the perfect time for me to take action. I was there and I was motivated because of the pain. The Universe was sending me a message and I knew from experience to listen to what the Universe was telling me as it was always supportive of my goals. So I signed up for the introductory offer of unlimited yoga classes for 30 days.

I was a little nervous when I went in for my first class because I didn’t know how to “do” yoga. From the moment I walked in the door I felt welcomed and comfortable. Everyone who works there is friendly and supportive. When I entered the room where the classes are held I was afraid the class would be full of young hard bodies and I would feel out of place. Instead, there were people of various ages and I could see a few extra pounds here and there. I thought “These people are just like me!” and I immediately felt more at ease.

When class started I realized my concern over not knowing how to “do” yoga was unfounded. There is no judgment inside Yoga Born. The instructors guide you step by step and are there to gently assist you if required. The primary focus is on keeping yourself safe in your practice. You are encouraged to do what you can do and to not push yourself past the limits where you are comfortable. You are guided to let go of all of the thoughts in your mind and simply be present in the moment. The mindful breathing is calming and soothing.

Two months into my yoga practice I am addicted, to yoga and Yoga Born. I have never been a big fan of exercise. My mind was always focused on what I could be doing and how that was more important than exercising. At Yoga Born it’s a completely different experience. I am able to let go of all of the craziness in my head and be completely present to my practice in that moment. The class flies by and I always feel rejuvenated and energized at the end. If I am unable to make class for a day or two I really miss it and can’t wait to get back.

The results are wonderful and I enjoy the benefits every day. My flexibility is greatly improved and I notice it every time I check for cars in my blind spot when I drive. I go up and down stairs easily and with no pain from my knee. Increased muscle strength makes almost everything I do easier. I helped my daughter move recently and was able to do more and had no aches and pains afterwards. Most of the tweaks and twinges I used to experience have gone away. My energy level is higher and I breathe easier. I feel better all the time and that is awesome!

Whatever your age or physical condition, I am convinced that the best thing you can do to support yourself and a high quality of life is to practice yoga. And if you’re going to practice yoga there is no better place to do it than Yoga Born.
