The New Year is Here…Now What?

The start of the New Year is the best time to turn your attention to your own practices. Are you wondering: “What does this mean?”

Let me re-cap before I answer that question: As 2011 ended I recognized the vital role Yoga and Mindfulness have played in my year. Continuously giving to others brings me great joy, teaching yoga to others and watching their armor fall to the ground as they unfold and fall in love with their lives is the best job I’ve ever had. Following the words my grandparents shared with me, “Treat others as you want to be treated.” CHECK (I’ve that action down)

Taking these words to heart I an epiphany… I have not been treating myself as well as I treat others.

I  had to be honest with myself, I don’t always treat myself as spectacularly as I treat others. Turning attention to myself stirs thoughts of being selfish, greedy, inconsiderate, rude, careless and eventually anger stirs.

I propose you take a few minutes at the start or end or your day to focus deeply on what you’ve been doing in life that makes sense for you. Specifically your thoughts and actions that fill you with delight and joy. When you approach any situation from a place of authenticity you do not second guess yourself, you do not make excuses and you do not apologize or feel guilty.

My hope for all is that this be the year we focus with great clarity on paying attention to how we feel. Feel your entire self from the outside in with open arms of acceptance when you think a thought or act in a way that feels gross and do better next time. It’s recognizing our tendencies then taking action to care for ourselves in better ways.

I believe in you and I ask that you Trust yourself and Love yourself unconditionally to care for yourself in ways that you haven’t even imagined yet in 2012 and have a fabulous time along the way.

Dawn, this is great. With your permission, I would like to copy and paste some of it on Facebook. I would put your name and the studio name on it as well.
See you soon!

I have definitely shared that thought from time to time. It’s so easy to spend all of my time caring for others, and there’s always so much to do, that when I do take time to care for myself I feel selfish. It’s easy to see this in other people, but when turning the light on myself I pretend that I can do it all without taking time to fill me up. Thanks for reminding me to care for myself as much as I do for others.
